What is rebar?

Rebar (reinforcing bar) is a hot-rolled deformed steel bar used to reinforce concrete in tension — the most fundamental application of steel in construction. Diameters typically range from 8 mm to 50 mm, with surface deformations (ribs) rolled in to improve bond with cement. Standard yield strengths are 400, 500 or 600 MPa per ISO 6935-2; national standards include ASTM A615/A706 (US), BS 4449 (UK), GB/T 1499.2 (China). Rebar consumption is the most direct steel indicator of construction-cycle health globally.

How rebar is priced

The global seaborne benchmark is the LME Steel Rebar FOB Turkey (Platts) cash-settled futures contract — Turkey is the world's #1 long-products exporter, and its FOB price discovers global rebar value better than any other single point. The settlement source is the Platts FOB Turkey rebar daily assessment. Regional spot benchmarks include the SHFE (Shanghai) deformed-bar futures contract — the largest steel futures contract in the world by volume — and physical assessments from Fastmarkets and Argus for EU CIS / domestic Turkey / Black Sea / SE Asia / US Gulf.

Where rebar is produced

Rebar production is regionally distributed because the product is bulky and low-margin — transport costs limit the economic catchment of any single mill. The dominant exporters and producers are China (~50% of world rebar via SHFE-linked mills), Turkey (the largest seaborne exporter, ~25 Mt/year, mostly to MENA and SE Asia), India, CIS countries (Russia, Ukraine), and the Gulf Cooperation Council mills. The US market is supplied almost entirely by domestic EAF mini-mills (Nucor, CMC, Gerdau Long Steel). Per USGS MCS 2026 Iron-Steel, total US apparent steel-mill-products consumption was ~95 Mt in 2025.

Who produces rebar

Rebar production is dominated by EAF (electric-arc-furnace) mini-mills feeding on scrap, plus some BF-BOF mills that produce both flat and long products. Notable producers:

What rebar is used for

Concrete reinforcement — essentially the only end-use of rebar. Sub-applications:
  • Residential and commercial construction (slabs, columns, walls).
  • Civil infrastructure (bridges, tunnels, dams, highway substructure).
  • Wind-turbine foundations — a single onshore turbine foundation uses 30-50 t of rebar.
  • Earthquake-resistant detailing (ductile high-strength rebar grades B500B / B500C / Grade 60-80).
Rebar consumption correlates directly with cement consumption (typically ~80-130 kg of rebar per cubic metre of structural concrete) and is one of the most-watched industrial indicators of construction-cycle health and infrastructure stimulus.

  • Rebar is on the EU CBAM list (covered alongside HRC, plate and other steel categories) and — because most rebar is EAF-route with ~70-80% lower embedded CO₂ than BF-BOF — EAF mills have a structural advantage post-2026 in EU-bound trade.
  • The SHFE rebar contract was the world's largest steel futures contract by trading volume for most of the 2015-2023 decade. Trading volumes peaked at over 5 billion tonnes notional per year.
