What is silicomanganese?

Silicomanganese (SiMn) is an iron-silicon-manganese ternary alloy carrying typically 65-68% Mn, 14-21% Si and 1.5-3% C. It is produced in submerged-arc electric furnaces from manganese ore + quartz + coke. SiMn is preferred over FeMn whenever the steelmaker also needs silicon deoxidation in a single addition (most carbon and low-alloy steel grades). Per International Manganese Institute (IMnI), global SiMn production is approximately 16-18 Mt/yr — substantially larger than the ~6 Mt/yr of high-carbon FeMn, making SiMn the single largest-tonnage ferroalloy on Earth.

How SiMn is priced

SiMn has no regulated futures contract. Pricing is by daily/weekly assessment from Fastmarkets, Argus, Platts / S&P Global and SMM — published as in-warehouse Rotterdam (US dollars per metric ton, Mn-content basis), CIF Japan/Korea/SE Asia and US Gulf assessments. Large contract tonnage is negotiated quarterly between integrated producers (Eramet, South32, Assmang, ChEMK) and major rebar/HRC mills. SiMn price tracks the manganese ore market more directly than FeMn does, because SiMn furnaces accept lower-grade ore.

Where SiMn is produced

SiMn production is concentrated in China (~60-65% of world tonnage, supplying domestic rebar/HRC mills), India, Ukraine (historically Nikopol, disrupted post-2022), Norway (Eramet Sauda, TIZIR Tyssedal), Russia (ChEMK, Mechel Bratsk), Malaysia (OM Sarawak), South Africa (Assmang Cato Ridge, Metalloys), Georgia and Brazil. Per USGS MCS 2026 Manganese, US apparent SiMn imports in 2025 were ~310 kt — the import source basket largely overlaps with FeMn.

What SiMn is used for

SiMn is the workhorse deoxidant-plus-alloy addition for carbon and low-alloy steelmaking — particularly for long products like rebar and wire rod where both Mn and Si are required in the finished steel. A single SiMn addition replaces two separate FeMn + FeSi additions, simplifying ladle metallurgy. SiMn consumption tracks rebar production directly, which is why Chinese SiMn output is roughly proportional to SHFE rebar futures volumes. Roughly 90% of SiMn flows into carbon steel; the remainder feeds alloy and tool steels.
