LBMA's Gold Bar Integrity Database — Mandatory Traceability from 2027

The London Bullion Market Association launched its Gold Bar Integrity (GBI) Database in January 2026 as a voluntary reporting platform, with mandatory compliance for every Good Delivery-listed refiner beginning in 2027. This is the single most consequential origin-tracing development in precious metals because it converts refiner-level provenance disclosure from a private compliance exercise into a centralized, LBMA-controlled digital record.

1. The GBI Database: architecture, timeline, and refiner scope

The Gold Bar Integrity (GBI) Database is described by the LBMA as a centralized digital repository designed with cybersecurity protocols and blockchain-inspired architecture to collect, store, and verify sourcing information from refiners around the world, intended to ensure data reliability, prevent tampering, and streamline oversight in a manner aligned with regulated sectors such as finance and energy (Bullion World, LBMA's New Gold Refinery Transparency Framework). LBMA Chief Executive confirmed to Reuters that the database launched in January, with refiners on the association's Good Delivery roster asked to begin voluntary reporting from January of the following year, and mandatory compliance for all listed refiners taking effect in 2027 (Reuters, LBMA's New Database for Gold Bars Will Be Mandatory for Listed Refineries from 2027). 3. Public consultation and disclosure guidance: NGO input into LBMA rulemaking

Blockchain Provenance Platforms — Everledger's Diamond and Gemstone Traceability

Everledger remains the reference blockchain-provenance operator for diamonds and coloured gemstones, running two distinct platforms — the commercial Everledger Platform and the open Provenance Proof Blockchain co-developed with the Gübelin Gem Lab — that together have processed well over 500,000 coloured gemstones and more than a million diamonds. IBM Food Trust illustrates the same permissioned-blockchain traceability model applied outside precious materials, in food supply chains.

1. The Everledger Platform: digital twins and the GIA Diamond Origin Report

Founded in 2015 and running on the Hyperledger Fabric protocol, Everledger builds a “digital twin” for each diamond — a permanent record combining up to 40 metadata points, laser-inscribed serial-number photographs, cut, carat, and colour data, sourced through partnerships with major certificate houses in the United States, India, Israel, and Antwerp (itnews, Everledger Uses Blockchain to Stamp Out Blood Diamonds). IBM Food Trust operates on the same underlying architecture — the open-source Hyperledger Fabric framework hosted by the Linux Foundation — applied to food rather than precious materials, allowing growers, suppliers, and retailers to share origin details, processing data, and shipping information on a permissioned blockchain network, with a dedicated certifications module verifying provenance of digitized certificates such as organic or fair-trade designations (IBM, IBM Food Trust Expands Blockchain Network to Foster a Safer, More Transparent and Efficient Global Food System). Certification-Based Chain of Custody — Fairmined and the Responsible Jewellery Council

Alongside blockchain-native platforms, two decades-old certification schemes — the Alliance for Responsible Mining's Fairmined Standard and the Responsible Jewellery Council's Code of Practices and Chain of Custody standard — provide the audited, paper-and-registry-based traceability backbone that most artisanal and industrial gold still moves through. Both are tightening their rules in 2025–2026, with RJC introducing new diamond-traceability guidance effective 1 January 2026.

1. The Fairmined Standard: segregation, licences, and the Premium mechanism

The Fairmined Standard for Gold and Associated Precious Metals, administered by the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM), certifies artisanal and small-scale mining organizations against requirements spanning formal legal mining practice, environmental protection, labour conditions, and traceability, verified by independent third-party auditors accredited by ARM on a regular audit cycle (Fairmined, The Fairmined Standard). The standard operates a full chain-of-custody system tracking certified gold from the mining organization through the refiner, bullion dealer or fabricator, and ultimately to the jeweller; every participant in that chain must hold a Fairmined licence issued by ARM and must maintain records demonstrating that Fairmined gold is kept physically segregated from non-certified material at every handoff (SkyJems, Fairmined Gold encyclopedia entry citing the ARM standard). Refiners processing Fairmined gold must themselves meet responsible-sourcing criteria and submit to audit, extending the certification's traceability requirement upstream into the refining stage rather than stopping at the mine gate (SkyJems, Fairmined Gold encyclopedia entry). 2. RJC's Code of Practices and Chain of Custody: mandatory audits, 2024 revision, LGMS deadlines

The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), a not-for-profit standard-setter founded in 2005 and now counting over 1,000 members across 70 countries, operates two distinct certification tracks: the Code of Practices (COP), mandatory for all commercial members within two years of joining and covering the entire mine-to-retail supply chain, and the voluntary Chain of Custody (COC) standard specifically for tracking gold, silver, and platinum group metals through a fully traceable, responsibly-sourced chain (DNV, Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) audits). The current 2024 version of the COP was approved by the RJC Board on 19 November 2024, introducing a new requirement (COP 7.2) obliging refiners to identify and report on the origin of mined and recycled gold to the RJC, alongside a strengthened know-your-customer obligation (COP 12.2) for members extracting RJC-scope materials from input substances on behalf of third parties (Responsible Jewellery Council, Code of Practices 2024). Certification follows a five-step cycle — self-assessment, independent third-party audit, audit report, certification decision, and periodic surveillance — with a mandatory surveillance audit required 12–18 months after certification start and full recertification every three years (Responsible Jewellery Council, Member Certification — COP). Firm 2025–2026 transition deadlines are already binding: from 1 January 2026, certification audits can no longer be conducted against the superseded 2019 COP or 2017 Chain of Custody standard, and members previously certified before 1 January 2024 who deal in RJC's new Laboratory-Grown Material Standard (LGMS) must complete a combined COP 2024/LGMS audit by 1 May 2026, while those certified after that date have until 31 December 2026 (Responsible Jewellery Council, Member Certification — COP).

3. RJC's new diamond-traceability guidance and the ISEAL-driven 2027 roadmap

The RJC announced a phased plan to strengthen diamond provenance claims through a new Supplementary Guidance to COP Provision 14 on diamond traceability claims, taking effect 1 January 2026, with a supporting audit toolkit to follow in the first quarter of 2026 (Responsible Jewellery Council, RJC Introduces Diamond Traceability Guidance). Because developing an entirely new traceability standard was not feasible in the near term within the RJC's ISEAL standard-setting framework, the organization opted for this two-phase interim approach, with the possibility of full integration into future COP/COC reviews beginning in 2027 in line with ISEAL requirements (Responsible Jewellery Council, RJC Introduces Diamond Traceability Guidance). RJC's blockchain engagement has historically been indirect — the certification body itself relies on third-party independent audits rather than operating its own distributed ledger — but its Code of Practices explicitly requires members to exercise due diligence in accordance with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas, the same international reference framework that underpins LBMA Responsible Gold Guidance and most blockchain-provenance platform designs (Responsible Jewellery Council, Code of Practices 2024).

Current status: Fairmined and RJC remain the two dominant certification-based chain-of-custody schemes for artisanal and industrial precious metals respectively, with RJC in the middle of a multi-deadline 2024-standard transition running through the end of 2026 and a diamond-traceability guidance regime that took effect 1 January 2026.
